Freshmen Girls Lose Despite Ferocious Comeback

273 Reads

The Catholic Central Freshmen girls team hadn’t lost since Jan. 5th against Mona Shores.  They had been on a six game winning streak that sadly came to an end last night against the Holland Christian Maroons.  What the heck is a Maroon anyway? That does not sound as cool as a Cougar…but I digress…

The Maroons (???) had only lost two games prior to entering Our House last night.  Both were close games. As Comstock Park did not have a freshmen team, non-conference Holland Christian was gracious enough to come play the Lady Cougars.  “Those are some tall girls!” I heard more than one parent say, over and over and over.  What do they serve at lunchtime there in Holland anyway? What does a Maroon eat?  Again, I digress…

The half-time score had Holland Christian up, 14-9.  CC got a wake up call and looked and played much stronger in the second half.  It was nip and tuck, CC would tie it up only to have Holland Christian take the lead again.  HC’s coach called an important time out, which got his team rolling.  At one point near the end of the 4th quarter, the Cougars were down by about 8 points.  Hey, you got a fan writing this article, my kid doesn’t even play on the team, so I am not as accurate as I could be otherwise. (Laugh track inserted here).  When CC’s coach, Coach Holt called a time out, you knew she meant business. I don’t know what words of loud encouragement she said, but the Cougars kicked it up a notch.  They were like wildcats, they fought, scratched, and pawed their way back into the game, down the home stretch, never giving up.  Ultimately the final score was 32-36, with time running out, the freshmen girls gave it all they had. So proud of them for making it a very  exciting game.

The good news is the Lady Cougars have a conference record of 4-0 , which currently has them leading that conference. There are four games left in their regular schedule, three of which are against conference teams.  The next game on Valentine’s Day is sure to be a doosey. They will face off against West Catholic (at West Catholic high school), who may want to have their revenge on the Courgars as they lost to CC on Jan. 17 by (wince here) a whopping 29 points.  Ouch!  So come out and cheer on your very own CC Freshmen girls team before that season ends. Go Cougars!
