A total team effort helped the Cougars come away with a 69-42 victory over Muskegon Catholic Central Wednesday night. Catholic Central is now 2-0 on the season and will host the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids on Friday, December 16th at 6pm.
Offense did not seem to be a problem for the Cougars tonight as the first 12 points of the game came from three different Cougar players. Sophomore Austin Braun and Junior Jaylen Mayfield came out hot with a couple quick layups followed by a back to back threes from Junior Mitch Bussell. Muskegon Catholic Central put on the pressure with a couple baskets to respond bringing the score to 15-9 ending the quarter. Three more Cougars found the scoresheet in the second quarter helping Catholic Central to a 33-21 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
A dominant 23-10 3rd quarter helped pull the Cougar lead 56-33 at the end of 24 mins of play. Offensively 7 players have found the scoresheet with 10 contributing on the floor. Jacob Polakovich was big in the post with a blocked shot and a tip in to keep the Cougars in the lead going into the final stretch of the game. The Crusaders made a small run in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougar offense was too much to handle and Catholic Central comes away with the 68-42 victory.
Quotable: “We had 21 assisted buckets, which showed we played a good team game tonight. I like the way we shared the ball and made the extra pass. Our bigs were dominant inside, but credit to the guards because you can’t have good bigs without guards that are working the ball into them. Finding the inside was a big step for us from last week.” – TJ Meerman (head coach)
By the Numbers: Four Cougars earned double digit points tonight. Leading the way was Jacob Polakovich with 20 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Austin Braun with 13 points and 9 assists, while Jaylen Mayfield and Jake Pelkey each had 11 points.
Up Next: Catholic Central continue their non conference schedule hosting a rivalry match up with the Pioneers of East Grand Rapids on Friday, December 16th at 6pm before hosting the Catholic Invitational where they will play the Loyola Bulldogs on December 29th at 8pm.
